The First Day Back After Time Away

For the morning you return to a full inbox and the break already feels undone. It gets you through the first day without losing what the time off gave you, and keeps the pile from setting the terms.

The checklist

  • Start an hour later if you can — Beginning the day before the inbox opens is easier than beginning inside it.
  • Read everything before replying to anything — Half of what looked urgent sorted itself out while you were gone.
  • Write down the three things that matter — A pile is not a list until you have turned it into one.
  • Turn down the first new request — Whatever arrives on day one can wait until you have your footing.
  • Keep one thing from the time away — The walk, the early night, the book; one habit is worth carrying back.
  • Expect to feel behind and slow — The first day always feels like this; it is not a verdict on the break.
  • Finish one small thing before lunch — One completed item does more for the day than three half-started ones.
  • Leave on time today — Working late on day one sets the terms for the whole week.

How to use it

Run through it whenever you need it, honestly and without scoring yourself. A checklist is a way of noticing, not a test: an item you cannot tick is information about the day, not a verdict on you. Over a few weeks the pattern of what gets ticked and what does not says more than any single pass.

With a free Theraglee account the checklist remembers each pass, so you can look back. Without one, you can still read it here and keep your own copy.
