Finding Meaning in Your Work
For anyone whose work, paid or unpaid, has started to feel like just a list of tasks. Each day is one small way to notice who your work helps, take pride in doing it well and connect it to what you care about.
Work · Work · Values · Motivation · one to-do a day · you choose how many days
The first seven days
- Day 1Picture one person who will use what you make or do today, and give them a first name in your mind.
- Day 2Pick one task on today's list and decide to do it with full care, from the first step to the last.
- Day 3Ask a coworker how they ended up in this line of work, and listen for the part that still matters to them.
- Day 4Write down three values you hold, then watch for one of them showing up in your work before lunch.
- Day 5Before your first task, roll your shoulders and remind yourself that today's effort is enough.
- Day 6Write down one person your work made life a little easier for today.
- Day 7Fold the last towel, shirt or apron in the pile as neatly as the first one, and notice the difference.
Further into the year
The to-dos keep changing as the year goes on. A few from later in this theme:
- Day 30Name one person your unpaid work helped today, even if they never said thank you.
- Day 60Write down one thing your caregiving made possible for someone you love today.
- Day 120Choose one task this morning to do without checking your phone in between, start to finish.
- Day 240Hang your work lanyard, apron or jacket in the same spot every evening as a small closing ritual.
- Day 365Think about who will enjoy the meal you cook tonight, and cook it with them in mind.
How a challenge works
A Theraglee challenge is a theme with one small to-do for every day of a year. You choose how long yours runs, anywhere from a week to the full year, and each day you get the next to-do: something that takes a few minutes and fits inside an ordinary day. Tick it off when it is done. Nothing is scored and nothing is lost if you miss a day; the next to-do is simply waiting when you come back.
Challenges come with a free Theraglee account, which never asks for a card. Your progress stays private to you.
