Staying Close to the Older People You Love
For anyone with a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle or older friend they want to stay close to. Each day is one small way to connect, from a phone call or a shared meal to asking for their stories and making visits easier.
Connection · Family · Relationships · one to-do a day · you choose how many days
The first seven days
- Day 1Call your grandma for five minutes this morning just to ask how her day is going.
- Day 2Find out what time of day your dad most enjoys company, then plan a short visit for that hour.
- Day 3Wonder aloud with your aunt about what she wanted to be at age ten, and let her answer take as long as it needs.
- Day 4Check with your uncle what he would like a hand with, and wait for his answer before you offer your own ideas.
- Day 5Learn your grandpa's favorite card game from him, and play a few hands at the kitchen table.
- Day 6Pick a regular time to call your dad, and put it in your calendar so it becomes something you both expect.
- Day 7Bring two cups of coffee to your dad's house this morning and drink them with him at the kitchen table.
Further into the year
The to-dos keep changing as the year goes on. A few from later in this theme:
- Day 30Retell an old family joke at dinner and let your uncle deliver the punch line.
- Day 60Thank your mom for a skill she taught you that you still use, and name a recent time you used it.
- Day 120Share a photo book or slideshow of a recent trip with your grandma, and enjoy her questions.
- Day 240Steer away from politics at the table and ask your grandpa about his garden instead.
- Day 365Plan a simple tradition you two can repeat each season, like a fall puzzle or a spring planting.
How a challenge works
A Theraglee challenge is a theme with one small to-do for every day of a year. You choose how long yours runs, anywhere from a week to the full year, and each day you get the next to-do: something that takes a few minutes and fits inside an ordinary day. Tick it off when it is done. Nothing is scored and nothing is lost if you miss a day; the next to-do is simply waiting when you come back.
Challenges come with a free Theraglee account, which never asks for a card. Your progress stays private to you.
