Welcoming People into Your Home
For anyone who would like to have people over more often but feels the house, the cooking or the nerves get in the way. Each day is one small step toward simple, low key hospitality, from a cup of tea with a neighbor to a relaxed potluck.
Connection · Relationships · Loneliness · Social Anxiety · one to-do a day · you choose how many days
The first seven days
- Day 1Write down three people you would enjoy seeing more often, without worrying yet about where or when.
- Day 2Set a timer for ten minutes and tidy only the rooms a guest would actually see.
- Day 3Buy one box of store-bought cookies and tuck it in the cupboard just for guests who drop by.
- Day 4Open the door before your guest knocks if you hear them on the steps, and greet them with a smile and their name.
- Day 5Pull out one board game you already own and check that all the pieces are still in the box.
- Day 6Think of one neighbor you wave to but rarely talk with, and picture them sitting on your porch for a few minutes.
- Day 7Pick one chair you could pull into the living room when someone visits, and sit in it to check it is comfortable.
Further into the year
The to-dos keep changing as the year goes on. A few from later in this theme:
- Day 30Gather your spare pillows and blankets in one basket so movie guests can get comfortable on the floor or the couch.
- Day 60Set out a battery lantern or a string of battery lights so a summer evening outside feels a little special.
- Day 120Host a craft circle where everyone brings whatever they are working on, knitting, sketching or mending, and simply works side by side.
- Day 240Clear a wide path from the front door to the living room so a guest with a walker or wheelchair can move freely.
- Day 365Rotate the hosting of a monthly gathering among two or three friends so it stays easy for everyone.
How a challenge works
A Theraglee challenge is a theme with one small to-do for every day of a year. You choose how long yours runs, anywhere from a week to the full year, and each day you get the next to-do: something that takes a few minutes and fits inside an ordinary day. Tick it off when it is done. Nothing is scored and nothing is lost if you miss a day; the next to-do is simply waiting when you come back.
Challenges come with a free Theraglee account, which never asks for a card. Your progress stays private to you.
