Comparing Yourself Less

For anyone who measures their life against other people's highlights and comes up short. Each day is one small practice in noticing the comparison, stepping out of it, and coming back to your own pace, values and progress.

The first seven days

  • Day 1Catch one moment today when you measure yourself against someone else, and quietly say to yourself, "That's a comparison."
  • Day 2Write down the name of one person you often compare yourself to, then list three things about their life you have never seen.
  • Day 3Before you scroll this morning, ask yourself how you want to feel in an hour, and decide whether scrolling will help.
  • Day 4Mute one account that reliably leaves you feeling smaller, without announcing it or explaining it to anyone.
  • Day 5Find a photo of yourself from five years ago and note one way you have grown since then.
  • Day 6Write one sentence that begins, "What I actually want is," and finish it without mentioning anyone else.
  • Day 7When you feel a pang of envy today, ask, "What does this tell me I value?" and jot down the answer.

Further into the year

The to-dos keep changing as the year goes on. A few from later in this theme:

  • Day 30Turn off notifications for one feed that tends to pull you into comparison.
  • Day 60Notice when you look at someone's home and feel a pinch, and then look at one corner of your own you love.
  • Day 120Track one fitness change by comparing yourself only to your own starting point.
  • Day 240Notice one comparison in your thoughts, and then picture zooming out to see your whole life instead of one moment.
  • Day 365Close this challenge by writing, "My life, my pace, my values," and add one line about what that means to you.

How a challenge works

A Theraglee challenge is a theme with one small to-do for every day of a year. You choose how long yours runs, anywhere from a week to the full year, and each day you get the next to-do: something that takes a few minutes and fits inside an ordinary day. Tick it off when it is done. Nothing is scored and nothing is lost if you miss a day; the next to-do is simply waiting when you come back.

Challenges come with a free Theraglee account, which never asks for a card. Your progress stays private to you.
