Handling Rejection Gently

For anyone who takes a no hard, whether it comes from a job, a date, a friend or a group. Each day is one small way to steady yourself, keep it in proportion and keep reaching for what matters.

The first seven days

  • Day 1Read the rejection message once, then set your phone face down on the table for ten minutes.
  • Day 2Write "They said no to this" on a sticky note, and under it write what they did not say no to: you as a whole person.
  • Day 3Text one trusted friend a single honest line about the no you got, without polishing it first.
  • Day 4Ask one person who turned you down whether they could share a sentence of feedback, and thank them whatever they say.
  • Day 5Notice the small sting when a text goes unanswered, name it quietly to yourself, and let your shoulders drop.
  • Day 6Breathe in slowly through your nose for four counts after reading a no, then let the breath out even slower.
  • Day 7Name the one specific thing that was turned down, the application or the invitation, and say it aloud without adding "because I am not enough."

Further into the year

The to-dos keep changing as the year goes on. A few from later in this theme:

  • Day 30Tell yourself, "A quiet room is not a verdict," after your idea gets little response in a meeting.
  • Day 60Notice how often a declined invitation comes with a kind reason, and read that reason twice.
  • Day 120Sit in the shade with a cool drink on a hot summer day and let a declined plan pass through you.
  • Day 240Invite yourself to something lovely alone today, like a library visit or a sunset walk.
  • Day 365Close the day by writing one line about a small rejection you handled gently today.

How a challenge works

A Theraglee challenge is a theme with one small to-do for every day of a year. You choose how long yours runs, anywhere from a week to the full year, and each day you get the next to-do: something that takes a few minutes and fits inside an ordinary day. Tick it off when it is done. Nothing is scored and nothing is lost if you miss a day; the next to-do is simply waiting when you come back.

Challenges come with a free Theraglee account, which never asks for a card. Your progress stays private to you.
