Finding Patience in Everyday Waiting

For anyone who gets wound up in lines, on hold or stuck behind a slow driver. Each day is one small way to turn waiting into a calmer moment, so delays sting a little less and the rest of the day goes more smoothly.

The first seven days

  • Day 1Standing in the next checkout line, let your shoulders drop and count five slow breaths before you reach for your phone.
  • Day 2Notice where waiting shows up in your body today: a tapping foot, a tight jaw, a held breath. Just name it.
  • Day 3When the microwave starts its countdown, stay with it and breathe slowly until it beeps, without opening another app.
  • Day 4Next time you are put on hold, switch to speakerphone and wipe down one counter while the music plays.
  • Day 5At a red light today, keep your eyes on the road, loosen your grip on the wheel and let one long breath out.
  • Day 6Bring a paperback in your bag today so the next wait has something good in it.
  • Day 7While a web page loads, unclench your jaw and let your tongue rest at the bottom of your mouth.

Further into the year

The to-dos keep changing as the year goes on. A few from later in this theme:

  • Day 30If your flight is delayed, find a window and watch the ground crew work for five minutes.
  • Day 60While the printer warms up, stand with your weight even on both feet and breathe.
  • Day 120Fill an empty wait with a quiet compliment to someone nearby, if it fits the moment.
  • Day 240Wish the delivery driver a good day when your package finally arrives.
  • Day 365When the hold time is announced as long, set a kitchen timer for it and go water the garden or tidy a shelf.

How a challenge works

A Theraglee challenge is a theme with one small to-do for every day of a year. You choose how long yours runs, anywhere from a week to the full year, and each day you get the next to-do: something that takes a few minutes and fits inside an ordinary day. Tick it off when it is done. Nothing is scored and nothing is lost if you miss a day; the next to-do is simply waiting when you come back.

Challenges come with a free Theraglee account, which never asks for a card. Your progress stays private to you.
