Finishing What You Start

For anyone with a trail of half-done projects, open tabs and almost-finished chores. Each day is one small practice in carrying something across the finish line, so you feel the relief of done more often than the weight of almost.

The first seven days

  • Day 1Pick one tiny unfinished thing in your home, like a load of laundry still in the dryer, and carry it all the way to put away.
  • Day 2Write down every open loop you can think of in five minutes, then circle the single one you will close today.
  • Day 3Before you start your next task, write one sentence that describes exactly what "done" will look like.
  • Day 4Find a half-written email in your drafts folder, finish it, and press send before lunch.
  • Day 5Return one item that has been sitting by the door waiting to go back to the store or a friend.
  • Day 6Write and mail a thank-you note you have been meaning to send for a while.
  • Day 7Close every browser tab you have finished with, keeping only the ones you need for today.

Further into the year

The to-dos keep changing as the year goes on. A few from later in this theme:

  • Day 30Define "done" for today's cleaning before you start, such as "the kitchen floor is swept and mopped."
  • Day 60Ask a coworker or classmate to hold you to one deadline this week by asking you about it.
  • Day 120Change the light bulb that has been out for weeks.
  • Day 240Finish cleaning one window inside and out.
  • Day 365End today by finishing one small task you have carried for weeks, then rest knowing it is done.

How a challenge works

A Theraglee challenge is a theme with one small to-do for every day of a year. You choose how long yours runs, anywhere from a week to the full year, and each day you get the next to-do: something that takes a few minutes and fits inside an ordinary day. Tick it off when it is done. Nothing is scored and nothing is lost if you miss a day; the next to-do is simply waiting when you come back.

Challenges come with a free Theraglee account, which never asks for a card. Your progress stays private to you.
