Getting Better at Asking for Help
For people who carry everything alone because asking feels like a burden or a weakness. Each day is one small practice in asking, so help becomes something you can reach for before you are running on empty.
Communication · Communication · Assertiveness · one to-do a day · you choose how many days
The first seven days
- Day 1Write down the last time you needed help and did not ask. One sentence on what stopped you.
- Day 2Ask a stranger for directions today, even if you already know the way. Notice how quickly it is over.
- Day 3Ask a coworker to explain one thing you have been quietly working around instead of understanding.
- Day 4Text a friend and ask for a recommendation: a show, a recipe, a podcast. Small asks are practice.
- Day 5Let someone carry one bag for you today, or ask them to, if your hands are full.
- Day 6Ask a store employee where something is instead of hunting the aisles alone.
- Day 7Write down the sentence you are afraid someone will think if you ask for help. Read it back slowly. Is it true of the people you know?
Further into the year
The to-dos keep changing as the year goes on. A few from later in this theme:
- Day 30Ask the person next to you in line, at a counter, or on a bus one simple question. Directions count.
- Day 60Ask a coworker for the context you missed instead of pretending you followed along.
- Day 120Ask a friend to come over and just be in the room while you do something hard.
- Day 240Give someone the exact job you need done, not a vague "help me," and see how much easier it is for them.
- Day 365Look at how far you have come in asking, and ask one person to help you keep going.
How a challenge works
A Theraglee challenge is a theme with one small to-do for every day of a year. You choose how long yours runs, anywhere from a week to the full year, and each day you get the next to-do: something that takes a few minutes and fits inside an ordinary day. Tick it off when it is done. Nothing is scored and nothing is lost if you miss a day; the next to-do is simply waiting when you come back.
Challenges come with a free Theraglee account, which never asks for a card. Your progress stays private to you.
