Giving Back to Your Community

For anyone who would like to help out beyond their own four walls but is not sure where to start. Each day is one small, doable way to give some time, skill or care to the community around you, at whatever scale fits your life.

The first seven days

  • Day 1Write down three places in your town you pass often and wonder about helping, such as a library, a park or a food pantry.
  • Day 2Spend ten minutes looking up what your nearest food bank says it needs most right now, and jot down one item.
  • Day 3Pick up five pieces of litter on your next walk and drop them in the nearest trash can.
  • Day 4Ask yourself what you are good at that someone in your community might need, and write down two answers.
  • Day 5Find out the hours of your local public library and whether it lists any volunteer roles.
  • Day 6Put one useful item in your grocery cart to drop in a donation bin, such as canned soup or peanut butter.
  • Day 7Look through your closet for one warm coat you no longer wear and set it aside for a coat drive.

Further into the year

The to-dos keep changing as the year goes on. A few from later in this theme:

  • Day 30Drop off one bag of gently used clothing at a donation center or a thrift store that supports a local cause.
  • Day 60Spend half an hour writing letters or cards for service members or veterans through a local drive.
  • Day 120Write down one way you received help from your community in the past, and think about passing it on.
  • Day 240Find a local group that knits, sews or crafts for hospitals or shelters, and ask how to join.
  • Day 365Share a recipe, garden tip or how-to at a community swap, class or newsletter.

How a challenge works

A Theraglee challenge is a theme with one small to-do for every day of a year. You choose how long yours runs, anywhere from a week to the full year, and each day you get the next to-do: something that takes a few minutes and fits inside an ordinary day. Tick it off when it is done. Nothing is scored and nothing is lost if you miss a day; the next to-do is simply waiting when you come back.

Challenges come with a free Theraglee account, which never asks for a card. Your progress stays private to you.
