Making Chores Feel Lighter

For anyone who feels buried under laundry, dishes and the chores that never seem to end. Each day is one small way to make housework lighter, from sharing the load and pairing chores with music to doing a little less and noticing the care in it.

The first seven days

  • Day 1Wash the one mug you used this morning while the kettle cools, and set it upside down on the rack to dry.
  • Day 2Start one load of laundry before breakfast, then let the machine do the work while you eat.
  • Day 3Ask the people you live with which chore they mind least, and listen without trying to fix anything.
  • Day 4Put on your favorite upbeat song before you start a chore, and let it carry you through the first few minutes.
  • Day 5Pick one surface in your home, wipe just that one, and call the job finished.
  • Day 6Fill the sink with warm soapy water before you start cooking tonight, so each bowl can slip in as soon as you finish with it.
  • Day 7Move the wet load to the dryer as soon as the machine beeps, and give yourself credit for that small step.

Further into the year

The to-dos keep changing as the year goes on. A few from later in this theme:

  • Day 30Decide this morning whether making the bed matters to you, and either way, let it be fine.
  • Day 60Keep a spare cloth and a bottle of water with a little vinegar under the bathroom sink, right where you need it.
  • Day 120Shake out the doormat on your way in from work and call that your cleaning for the evening.
  • Day 240Put your feet up for a few minutes before you begin the evening tidy.
  • Day 365Remember that a chore left for later is not a failure, just a choice about your energy today.

How a challenge works

A Theraglee challenge is a theme with one small to-do for every day of a year. You choose how long yours runs, anywhere from a week to the full year, and each day you get the next to-do: something that takes a few minutes and fits inside an ordinary day. Tick it off when it is done. Nothing is scored and nothing is lost if you miss a day; the next to-do is simply waiting when you come back.

Challenges come with a free Theraglee account, which never asks for a card. Your progress stays private to you.
