Making Room for Play

For grown-ups whose days are all obligations and no fun. Each day is one small invitation to play, make, or mess around for its own sake, so lightness gets a regular place in the week.

The first seven days

  • Day 1Write down three things you loved doing for fun as a kid. Circle the one you could try again this week.
  • Day 2Doodle in the margin of your notes for two minutes today, no subject, just loops and shapes.
  • Day 3Put on one song you cannot help moving to and dance in the kitchen until it ends.
  • Day 4Hum a made-up tune while you wash the dishes tonight and let it wander wherever it wants.
  • Day 5Build the tallest tower you can out of whatever is on your desk, then knock it down.
  • Day 6Skip instead of walking for ten steps somewhere no one will mind, or somewhere they will.
  • Day 7Fold a paper airplane from a piece of scrap paper and see how far it flies down the hallway.

Further into the year

The to-dos keep changing as the year goes on. A few from later in this theme:

  • Day 30Race a family member, a friend, or the microwave timer to put the groceries away.
  • Day 60Find a stick on a walk and let it be a wand, a sword, or a conductor's baton for a block.
  • Day 120Try hopscotch on a sidewalk grid, real or imagined, on your way somewhere today.
  • Day 240Write a haiku about your commute and post it on the fridge for others to add to.
  • Day 365Sort a bag of mixed candy, buttons, or crayons by color into a rainbow before you put them away.

How a challenge works

A Theraglee challenge is a theme with one small to-do for every day of a year. You choose how long yours runs, anywhere from a week to the full year, and each day you get the next to-do: something that takes a few minutes and fits inside an ordinary day. Tick it off when it is done. Nothing is scored and nothing is lost if you miss a day; the next to-do is simply waiting when you come back.

Challenges come with a free Theraglee account, which never asks for a card. Your progress stays private to you.
