The first seven days

  • Day 1Start an adventure list on the first page of a notebook and write down five small things near home you have never done.
  • Day 2Head home by a street you have never used, and pick out one house, sign or tree along it that you want to remember.
  • Day 3Browse one aisle at the grocery store you always skip, and bring home one item you have never cooked with.
  • Day 4Order a dish from a cuisine you have never tried, from a takeout menu or a food truck, and note what surprised you about it.
  • Day 5Choose a coffee shop you have never set foot in and sit there for fifteen minutes with whatever drink costs least.
  • Day 6Sit on a different bench, or a different patch of grass, at a park you already know, and take in the view from there.
  • Day 7Search your town's or county's events calendar online and copy two free events onto your adventure list.

Further into the year

The to-dos keep changing as the year goes on. A few from later in this theme:

  • Day 30Check the forecast the night before an outing and adjust your plan, or switch to your rainy-day option if needed.
  • Day 60Plan a sunrise outing to a nearby hill, beach or open field, and set out clothes and a thermos the night before.
  • Day 120Get ready for a first-snow walk: lay out boots and gloves so you can head out the morning it falls.
  • Day 240Visit a wildlife refuge or wetland boardwalk and look for one bird you have never seen before.
  • Day 365Write a short note about the most surprising thing you found close to home, and keep it with your adventure list.

How a challenge works

A Theraglee challenge is a theme with one small to-do for every day of a year. You choose how long yours runs, anywhere from a week to the full year, and each day you get the next to-do: something that takes a few minutes and fits inside an ordinary day. Tick it off when it is done. Nothing is scored and nothing is lost if you miss a day; the next to-do is simply waiting when you come back.

Challenges come with a free Theraglee account, which never asks for a card. Your progress stays private to you.
