The first seven days

  • Day 1Sit by a window for five minutes and count how many different birds you see.
  • Day 2Spend ten unhurried minutes brushing your dog or cat, working slowly from the neck toward the tail.
  • Day 3Take your dog on a slow sniff walk today and let them choose where to linger for as long as they like.
  • Day 4Rinse and refill your pet's water bowl with fresh, cool water, and notice them come over for a drink.
  • Day 5Step outside at dawn, stand still for three minutes, and listen for the first birds to start singing.
  • Day 6Watch a squirrel from a park bench for a few minutes and notice how it decides where to go next.
  • Day 7Look up one fact about a bird you often see near your home and share it with someone.

Further into the year

The to-dos keep changing as the year goes on. A few from later in this theme:

  • Day 30Sit on a balcony, stoop or step for ten minutes and note every animal sound you hear, from barks to birds.
  • Day 60Walk along a trail slowly for fifteen minutes and listen for rustling in the leaves, then look to see what made it.
  • Day 120Take a slow lap around a city park and look for animals people tend to overlook, like snails or beetles.
  • Day 240Hang a suet cake in a clean cage feeder during cold months and watch for woodpeckers and nuthatches.
  • Day 365Pick one animal habit from this challenge you want to keep, like a morning window watch, and plan when.

How a challenge works

A Theraglee challenge is a theme with one small to-do for every day of a year. You choose how long yours runs, anywhere from a week to the full year, and each day you get the next to-do: something that takes a few minutes and fits inside an ordinary day. Tick it off when it is done. Nothing is scored and nothing is lost if you miss a day; the next to-do is simply waiting when you come back.

Challenges come with a free Theraglee account, which never asks for a card. Your progress stays private to you.
