Growing Something Green
For anyone who would like a little more life around them, with or without a yard. Each day is one small step in growing plants, from a windowsill herb to a community garden plot, so tending something living becomes a quiet daily pleasure.
Wellbeing · Self-Care · Mindfulness · one to-do a day · you choose how many days
The first seven days
- Day 1Look around your home and find the brightest window, then stand there for a minute noticing how much sky you can see.
- Day 2Choose one easy plant to start with, such as a pothos, a spider plant or a snake plant, and write its name on a sticky note.
- Day 3Check whether a plant you'd like is toxic to cats, dogs or small children before you bring it home.
- Day 4Press a fingertip an inch into a houseplant's soil this morning, and water only if it feels dry at that depth.
- Day 5Turn your potted plant a quarter turn so the side that faced the room now faces the window.
- Day 6Fill a jar with a little water and stand the root ends of a bunch of green onions in it, then set it on a bright sill.
- Day 7Lift a pot right after watering and again a few days later, so your hands learn the difference between wet and dry.
Further into the year
The to-dos keep changing as the year goes on. A few from later in this theme:
- Day 30Choose a potting mix labeled for houseplants or containers, not garden soil, for anything in a pot.
- Day 60Split a crowded grocery store basil pot into three or four clumps and pot each one separately.
- Day 120Sow a row of sunflower seeds along a sunny fence and mark the spot with a stick.
- Day 240Set toxic houseplants up high or in a room your pets and small children don't go into.
- Day 365Choose one new plant or seed to try next, and write where in your space it will grow.
How a challenge works
A Theraglee challenge is a theme with one small to-do for every day of a year. You choose how long yours runs, anywhere from a week to the full year, and each day you get the next to-do: something that takes a few minutes and fits inside an ordinary day. Tick it off when it is done. Nothing is scored and nothing is lost if you miss a day; the next to-do is simply waiting when you come back.
Challenges come with a free Theraglee account, which never asks for a card. Your progress stays private to you.
