Reading for Pleasure

For anyone who used to love books but lost the habit somewhere along the way. Each day is one small step back toward reading for fun, from a single page at breakfast to a library visit, with no reading list to finish.

The first seven days

  • Day 1Read one page of any book with your morning coffee before you look at your phone.
  • Day 2Think back to a book you loved as a kid and write its plot, or what you remember of it, in two sentences.
  • Day 3Pick up whatever book is closest to you right now and read the first paragraph, just to see if it pulls you in.
  • Day 4Find out where your nearest public library is and what hours it keeps this week.
  • Day 5Sign up for a library card, online or at the front desk, so books cost you nothing to try.
  • Day 6Put your phone in another room for ten minutes tonight and spend that time with a few pages instead.
  • Day 7Choose one cozy spot at home that will be your reading place, and set a pillow or blanket there.

Further into the year

The to-dos keep changing as the year goes on. A few from later in this theme:

  • Day 30Tell someone at dinner about something you read today, even if it was a single paragraph.
  • Day 60Ask an older relative what book they loved when they were young and see if the library has it.
  • Day 120Before you read tonight, dim the overhead lights and turn on a soft lamp.
  • Day 240Listen to a poem read aloud by its author online, then read it yourself on the page.
  • Day 365Pick out a book to read next and set it beside your current one, so something good is always waiting.

How a challenge works

A Theraglee challenge is a theme with one small to-do for every day of a year. You choose how long yours runs, anywhere from a week to the full year, and each day you get the next to-do: something that takes a few minutes and fits inside an ordinary day. Tick it off when it is done. Nothing is scored and nothing is lost if you miss a day; the next to-do is simply waiting when you come back.

Challenges come with a free Theraglee account, which never asks for a card. Your progress stays private to you.
