Making Something with Your Hands
For anyone whose days happen mostly on screens. Each day is one small hands-on making task, from folding, sketching and mending to baking or potting a plant, done for the pleasure of making rather than for a perfect result.
Creativity · Self-Care · Mindfulness · one to-do a day · you choose how many days
The first seven days
- Day 1Fold a paper boat from a receipt or scrap of paper and float it in the sink for a minute.
- Day 2Sketch the mug you are drinking from right now, in pencil, without erasing a single line.
- Day 3Sew a loose button back onto a shirt or coat, taking your time with each stitch.
- Day 4Mix a small batch of salt dough from flour, salt and water, then roll it into three simple shapes.
- Day 5Pot a cutting from a houseplant, or a sprouting garlic clove, in a jar or small cup of soil.
- Day 6Write a short note by hand to someone you like and tuck it into an envelope you fold yourself.
- Day 7Doodle a page of spirals, waves and dots while you listen to a song you love.
Further into the year
The to-dos keep changing as the year goes on. A few from later in this theme:
- Day 30Stack a few smooth stones into a small cairn on a windowsill, porch step or garden bed.
- Day 60Doodle on the back of an envelope during a phone call or a meeting break, just shapes and lines.
- Day 120Fingerpaint a small picture with your bare fingertips, just to feel the paint on your skin.
- Day 240Regrow green onions, celery or lettuce from the root end in a shallow dish of water.
- Day 365Spend a quiet hour making anything that calls to you, and let your hands choose the materials.
How a challenge works
A Theraglee challenge is a theme with one small to-do for every day of a year. You choose how long yours runs, anywhere from a week to the full year, and each day you get the next to-do: something that takes a few minutes and fits inside an ordinary day. Tick it off when it is done. Nothing is scored and nothing is lost if you miss a day; the next to-do is simply waiting when you come back.
Challenges come with a free Theraglee account, which never asks for a card. Your progress stays private to you.
